This morning at around 2:30 a.m., a serious incident occurred at the Primary Smelter Plant East at the Aurubis Hamburg site. The three employees injured were taken to various area hospitals for further treatment. One employee has since died in the hospital. Two are still undergoing treatment and in extremely critical condition.
A nitrogen leak occurred while the three employees were conducting regular maintenance on the Primary Smelter Plant East, a central part of metal production in Hamburg. Rescue workers and the Plant Fire Department were immediately deployed. At no time was there any danger to the neighbors or the environment.
The proper authorities were duly informed. Aurubis is working closely with them to investigate the accident and determine the causes. Police have opened an investigation. The site of the accident has since been released.
Aurubis is deeply saddened by this tragic accident. “Our thoughts and sympathy go out to those involved, their loved ones, and everyone else affected at this difficult time,” Aurubis CEO Roland Harings said. “We are working closely with the authorities to conduct a thorough and detailed investigation of this incident.”
